Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 6:1-10.
‘For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.’ (Verse 10)
I think one of the most misquoted bible verses is ‘For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil’. I have often heard it quoted incompletely so that it becomes ‘Money is the root of all evil’. Money in itself is not evil. In today’s world it is a necessity. Whilst bartering can work to exchange some goods and services, it clearly is no substitute for currency; imagine trying to pay your freeway toll with a pumpkin! The love of money, when it overtakes our other thoughts, when it becomes our reason for living and when it takes us away from God, is when it becomes the root of evil.
Father you have promised to provide for us, so we do not need to pursue material wealth. Help us to trust in you and share the riches you have blessed us with. Amen
