Bible Reading: John 12:12-19
‘The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it.’ (Verses 12-14)
I was watching the arrival of the stars onto the ‘Red Carpet’ at the Oscars ceremony; those stars sure know how to make an entrance! The stretched limousines they arrived in were so luxurious looking, one of them being over 30 metres long and another a Corvette. The expensive clothes and accessories the stars were wearing were very glamorous, the extravagance was quite evident. The crowds of fans who came to see the arrivals were held back by guards and rails – no touching the merchandise!
What a contrast to the way that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. Here he was, the King of Heaven, riding on a donkey. No fine gown or crown, just a heart filled with love and a desire that all mankind should live as people of Christ.
Lord, you have taught us how to be humble. You had the right to all the fame and glory but instead took the path of your destination so that all man may live free of sin and death. Amen
