There was an interesting article in the paper recently about a particular species of bird that can determine the gender of the eggs they have laid. They use this knowledge to ensure that the ‘chosen’ gender is hatched first, thus giving that hatchling a greater chance of survival as they receive more food. How astonishing, and at this stage scientists are not able to explain how this species of bird is able to make that determination.
Scientists can’t explain it, I most certainly have no idea about how the birds know and yet I do not have a problem believing that they do know. In some ways, it is like my relationship with God. I’m probably not the only one who can’t explain or understand everything that happens in our world and yet I do believe that God is in control. Whilst seeing is believing, not seeing, and still believing is faith. And as Jesus said in John 20:29, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’ (NIV)
Lord, your universe is filled with mystery and wonder and we thank you for it. When we feel overwhelmed or unsure, please help us to remember that we are in your hands. Amen
